We enjoyed our time in Split, a beautiful city on the Adriatic coast. From the photo’s you can see why this city attracts the rich and famous. There are many expensive yachts and sailboats parked in the marina. Walking along the beautiful promenade which centers on Diocletian’s Palace, it looks out onto the Adriatic Sea and is filled with shops and cafés. The other direction, around the cliffs you find beautiful small beaches, we were surprised to see that a few locals are still swimming at this time of year. While in Split, we have beautiful weather, with warm temperatures when the sun was shining around 20°C, dropping down to below 10° when the sun started to go down around 4 PM. I was highly motivated to walk as much as I could, wanting to experience sunset and sunrise against this beautiful backdrop. My early morning walk was fantastic, with beautiful sunshine, open streets and with a few locals out buying their groceries from small shops, bakeries, and the fish market. We enjoyed exploring Diocletian’s Palace grounds, with a mixture of eclectic ruins, built over many generations. Instead of going to the museum we elected a family game of Kaiser at one of the cafes on the promenade, recognizing we are all a little bit tired of history museums. A large stage was set up on the promenade, sponsored by a local grocery chain, they were doing sound and stage check in preparation for the Croatian rock concert that Alastair and I witnessed on our evening walk later that night. We enjoyed a lovely meal in a restaurant featuring Croatian specialties and food “from the sea”.
