Iceland

First Stop – Reykjavik we immediately noticed lovely temperature early August, there were frequent sprinklings of rain and huge wind gusts! There is tons of geothermal heating meaning lots of hot tubs, hot rivers, and public swimming pools.  All around us there were beautiful views of flat-topped mountains and immense views of the ocean. Driving from the airport we travelled through fields of Lava rock.

The Perlan Museum Reykjavik – A natural history museum of Iceland, thanks to Kim for the recommendation. Built from what was initially old water tanks on a hill overlooking the city. It has an amazing Lava and Aurora display, a giant Ice cave, and a geological time table of Icelands history and geothermic energy.

On our whale watching expedition we were luckily enough to see one humpback whale repeatedly. Aiden got some great photos and a few short videos. We also enjoyed seeing the harbour and landscape from the ocean.

We loved going to the Whale Museum in Reykjavík, there were life-size models of 23 varieties of whales. We learned that the blue whale can weigh up to 120 tons, some of the whales lived 100 to 200 years, they have found evidence of old harpoons from the 18th century imbedded in the whales many year later. The kids enjoyed the whale Origami🐳. The audio narrator connected to through your phone, it had six or seven stations where you could learn interesting facts about the whales, and it was nice to listen and look around, rather than have to read everything. The close-up videos of whales were really amazing!
