Our time in the Dolomites, Norther Italy, was incredible. The mountain range is like nothing we have ever seen with sharp peaks, with interesting horizontal geographical lines visible in the carbonate rocks. The drive-into this magnificent UNESCO world heritage site was much longer than anticipated secondary to construction and traffic. As we arrived in the mountain range there was a torrential storm, the roads were windy and slow, yet again we were grateful for Alastair’s driving skills and calmness behind the wheel. The Airbnb was great with plenty of room for the five of us, it overlooked a beautiful turquoise lake, surrounded by sharp peaks. We enjoyed exploring the nature reserve and walking around the lake on our first day. Mimi and I also enjoyed finding delicious wine, sold for a very reasonable price coming from giant canisters.
Nothing compared to visiting Lake Soros on a total of a 16.5 km hike. It took a total of six hours hiking, but well worth the long journey for the amazing views. It was more challenging than we had expected, immense tourist traffic on steep and narrow trails and areas of rock climbing slowed everyone down. Understandably Mimi was very proud of herself for completing the trail. The coffee sold at the top of the trail was surprisingly delicious and we all enjoyed our picnic lunch around the lake.
After taking a chairlift and exploring some wonderful views, the kids and Alastair rode down on “The fun Bob”, a toboggan luge rail, it rattled quite a bit and didn’t feel nearly as secure as the previous experience. They were thrilled by the long journey and adrenaline surge!
Mimi treated us to a meal that Sophie rates as “10/10”. We had a delicious venison carpaccio followed by sizzling beef, Aiden having another huge beef steak and Alastair had venison chops. Mom and I shared a fresh homemade Chanterell mushroom and sausage risotto. We all enjoyed sharing the tiramisu for dessert. It was a fantastic way to finish our time in the Dolomites.
