Volubilis and Chefchaouen

After setting out on another long road trip we reached the Roman ruins of Volubilis, another UNESCO world heritage site. This ancient site is located on the top of a hill with amazing views of the surround land.  At the site visitors have full access to a huge Roman ruin site, still in amazing condition. It was a pleasure to visit, as it was not very crowded, and the weather was lovely.  We were free to explore at our own pace, learning a little form the occasional posted sign but leaving much to our imagination. This city and city gate were amazingly well maintained, and thus we got a sense of the Roman architecture. It is on of the most northern ruins and was likely occupied for 200 years with the Roman’s leaving in 285 CE.

We then travelled onto the blue city of Chefchaouen. After another long day of driving, we were thrilled to have a heated pool to ourselves.  The Muslim run Ryad gets around bathing suite restrictions by having families book the pool for a private swim, we all enjoyed the swim.  We toured the beautiful city, with a fast-speaking guide, after the sun had set.  Luckily we requested a later start the next morning getting a chance to enjoy the picturesque median when things were open and we could truly appreciate the blue of this picturesque city.  The Median was far less busy and chaotic than other Medinas we had visited, thus very pleasurable to explore on our own.
